After my sucess with my first steam engine, I decided to try another smaller one. Over Thanksgiving weekend 2001 I made this little gem. It has a 1/8 inch bore and 3/16 inch stroke. It really does run, although there isn't enough flywheel mass to allow it to run at any speed but "hummingbird".
There isn't much about this engine that the picures don't show. It is a basic wobbler (oscilating cylinder). The crank is actually made up of three pieces and press fit together. The flywheel is secured to the crank with a little wax. Heat it all up and put a drop of wax on the shaft. When it cools, the flywheel is held fast. At this scale you can get away with just about anything.
I still need to build a base for this engine, but I haven't gotten around to it. I probably won't until I have a good reason to (such as showing off at a show somewhere).
