One of my coworkers recently got a sub-notebook computer. This thing is small enough to fit in a (large) pocket and big enough to type on without resorting to a pencil or poking at individual buttons one at a time. The only problem with this machine is that it had no built in network connections. He tried a regular PCMCIA wireless card which worked fine, but stuck out of the side of the computer a little too far. The standard PCMCIA card with an integrated antenna on the circuit card tends to stick out rather far and is somewhat delicate. A request was made to somehow shorten the card. Some careful planning and fancy trimming later and I managed to shorten the card by about an inch. You can see in the photos just how much this really is. The card still works. There has been no noticeable reduction in signal strength or quality, and it doesn't need to be removed from the computer before being stuffed into a pocket.
